This foundational course introduces students to public health as a discipline, profession, and global enterprise. It provides an overview of the concepts, principles, and core functions of public health practice, including surveillance, prevention, health promotion, and population-level intervention. Students will explore the scope of public health applications, organizational structures, and frameworks spanning local to global systems. The course examines the philosophy, evolution, and evidence base of public health; introduces contemporary public health challenges; and highlights tools and approaches used across research, practice, and policy.

Emphasis is placed on understanding health determinants, assessing population health status, and exploring factors shaping disease patterns, health inequities, and service delivery. The course also familiarizes students with prominent public health issues affecting developing countries and current global health concerns. Guest lecturers from diverse areas of practice will broaden exposure to real-world career pathways and systems.
